Bash Bit: Kelly Clarkson Shops at the Bash!

Etsy Dallas was lucky enough to have Bradley Whitford, star of The Good Guys filmed right here in Big D, stop by the 2010 Spring Bash back in May. Well, we've done it again! At the recent 3rd Annual Jingle Bash, American Idol's Kelly Clarkson stopped by for some shopping in support of local artists.

Rumor has it she purchased some bags from Cut Out and Collect and this framed fabric wall art piece by yours truly (see above). Thanks for the support, Kelly!

Sponsor Spotlight: Etsy, Inc.

If you're a fan of Etsy Dallas (a local all-volunteer collective of artists who sell on Etsy), I don't need to tell you that Etsy.com is an online marketplace for artists and crafters to sell their handmade works of art to buyers all over the world. As a shopper, you may have utilized the shop local tool to find products created in your hometown to help support your local economy - maybe that's even how you found our team!? Or perhaps you've also stumbled upon the perfect pair of slippers handcrafted in Lithuania without ever boarding a plane.

Etsy.com has designed a myriad of ways to both buy and sell an ever-growing array of handcrafted, vintage, and art supply goods. Beyond their iconic homepage and handy shopping widgets, Etsy offers a variety of tools that have helped grow a handmade global community.

When I signed up for a user account in 2007, I thought I'd found a web site to sell things - but in joining the Etsy community, I've found friends and virtual coworkers here in Dallas (and all over the world) who share my love of design, hard work, business ethic, and creative spirit. Through these relationships, Etsy has supported and pushed me in my efforts to develop my artistic skill and continually grow my tiny business into something bigger.

The members of Etsy Dallas are thrilled to partner with Etsy.com, a top sponsor of the 3rd Annual Jingle Bash, and are happy to call Etsy.com "home." We thank you, dear reader, for being part of the crafty community.

Daily Discoveries: For the Traveler

Before you bon voyage this season, head on over to the Jingle Bash for these great items for travelers, picked by our very own David of Ferrochie:

If you do as much traveling as I do, you're going to need some entertainment. Sure, you could take your IPad, but what about something less complicated? Reading material of course!

Before you tell me you're satisfied with the latest edition of American Way (or worse, Sky Mall) , pick up a copy of Chet Art's The Society of Sinister Simians, 122 pages of pure entertainment and remarkable illustrations.

Personally I'm sick of the bad taste and unfortunate ensembles in flight attendant apparel. The only thing worse is usually the attitude you get for asking for the entire can of Dr. Pepper.

We can't do much about the attitude but we can refer these "What not to wear in the air" contestants to Tara to theT, who has put together a line of clothing called "Sky Girls." These garments reflect the style, prestige and romance of a time when traveling by air truly was for the privileged. With this hat, I guarantee you'll get attention. And maybe, just maybe, the flight attendants will let you keep the can!

So as long as you'er going vintage with a Sky Girls cap, you may as well pair it up with some updated vintage luggage by The Snowy Owl. Why would you want to blend in amongst the sea of black poly with the only unique feature is the hand written baggage ticket. Stand out! Be different! (I know you're the type who likes to be different and hip, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this blog. Am I right?)

Last but not least, you're going to need a bag - a bag that can be the key to fashion hip or fashion flop. Plus, there's no better time to have a flash bag then when you're traveling. From purses and clutches to messenger bags and backpacks, Rachel Elise has it! We aren't talking ordinary either. Rachel epitomizes haute couture hand bags in the local Dallas area. There are so many styles to fall in love with you'll probably buy several. And why not - who can't use more than one bag?

Sponsor Spotlight: Stitch-N-Lounge

This past fall Etsy Dallas member, Kelly Van Voltenburg of Banana Showcase, opened up Stitch-n-Lounge, a sewing boutique located in Cedar Hill offering modern designer fabrics, patterns, notions, and sewing classes. Says Kelly about sewing, "Even though people think I have expert sewing skills now that I own a fabric boutique I started out sewing simple pillows and pillowcases just like everyone else. Those are great beginning projects that give you a sense of accomplishment."

Kelly spent the four years prior to opening Stitch-n-Lounge selling handmade purses and accessories. She was inspired by the new trendy fabrics but had trouble finding a place to buy them. Shoppers would often tell her how they would love to sew if they could find a hip place to buy modern fabrics. "It was then that I realized there was a true need for a modern fabric boutique in my area," says Kelly.

After attending a recent Quilt Market where fabric and pattern designers debut their new fabrics and pattern lines, Kelly found lots of new things to buy for the store, which will be arriving in the next few months. Stitch-n-Lounge will also be getting sewing machines for people to take lessons and rent during open Sewing Lounge sessions.

We are proud to partner with Kelly and Stitch-n-Lounge, a top sponsor of the 3rd Annual Jingle Bash!

Free DIY Crafts with Oil and Cotton

The Jingle Bash isn't just about shopping for handmade art and crafts. It's also about making your own handmade creation. This November 20th, head over to the Palladium where the Bash will feature free DIY crafts to get shoppers in the holiday spirit. Oil and Cotton, will have the supplies and know-how on-hand for you to make your choice of either a paper ornament or beautiful paper angel. Arrive early - supplies are limited!

What Is Oil and Cotton?
Oil and Cotton, a new arts and crafts studio, opened this past September, shortly after owners Shannon Driscoll and Kayli House Cusick met while volunteering for Oak Cliff's Better Block, a neighborhood improvement project that included a free public art studio.

Blending an appreciation of the past with current art practices, Oil and Cotton provides creative space for education, exhibition, performance and exchange between the public and the art community. Their hands-on classes are taught by professionals with knowledge of both traditional and contemporary practice.

About the Owners
Shannon had been working as an art conservator of works on paper and instructor of adult workshops in traditional handcrafts and materials-based projects. Kayli was a piano teacher, composer, and children’s arts curriculum writer who had recently relocated from Brooklyn.

Their motivating philosophy is to make do with what you've got by placing a high value on the resourcefulness within each person. They are dedicated to doing things the old-fashioned way, whether through the reuse or repurposing of materials (turning fallen walnuts into inks) and accepting the possibilities of what can be created by hand. The ladies of Oil and Cotton honor the pioneering spirit of our elders and the character of our community.

What's In a Name?
Both oil and cotton are natural resources of Dallas and are the foundation of the most basic art materials. Oil is a binder in paint and inks. Cotton is used to produce textiles like fabric, canvas and paper. The arts, like oil and cotton, provide a canvas and medium that bind our community together.
